The Zoo

The local zoo has lots of interesting animals. There are lions, polar bears, penguins and lots more. All the animals need to eat well if they are to stay healthy.

Naturally, different animals need different types of food. As you will see food and its preparation can be very expensive, and this is a big worry for the zoo. At the moment the food bill costs £7,945 each week, which is a lot more than the zoo can afford.

Task 1

In Excel open the spreadsheet Year 8 / ICT / zoospreadsheet. Save the spreadsheet into your area and put your name in cell B1.

Use the Zoo Information link below and the information given here to fill in the spreadsheet. Your total food bill should be £ 7,945.

At the moment the zoo has:

12 Zebras

4 Lions

2 Polar Bear

37 Penguins

18 Monkeys

8 Sea Lions

3 Crocodiles

Task 2

The manager wants cut the food bill down to £5,000 per week. Buying less food, or cheaper food is not an option. The only thing they can do now is to sell some of the animals to another zoo.

Now you have created your spreadsheet, try changing the numbers of animals to reduce the total weekly food bill to £5,000.

Do it by trial and error

Find three different solutions to the problem. Copy each solution to a new part of the spreadsheet. In text boxes, explain what your solution is and what the new food bill is.

Task 3

In Word, write a report to the Owner of the zoo with your recommendations for reducing the numbers of some animals. You should explain which animals you have decided to sell and why. Include copies of your Excel spreadsheets to support your decision.
